He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Nanjing Normal University (Bachelor) in 1982, the Art History Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1985, majoring in Foreign Art History (Master), and Heidelberg University Art History Institute (PhD). He taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (1985-1986) and Peking University (1987-present) and was engaged in modern art creation. His academic interest focuses on the art research of the Han Dynasty. His course “Art History” was regarded as “the first art lesson of Peking University”.
